Solutions for low sex drive during menopause

Sex advice for Vancouver Island University students excerpted from The Navigator newspaper.

Question: I’m a mature student here at VIU and have just hit menopause. Nothing like getting hot flashes in class! Anyway, my question is this: My sex drive is suffering as of late, which is unnerving and frustrating because I used to love sex. Are there any medicines or suppliments (sic) that can help women like the ones that are available for men?

My Response: Menopause is certainly an interesting time for women and can appear as both a blessing and a curse for women. One of the side effects can be a reduced sex drive. While this may be a result of fluctuating hormones, it can also be attributed to hot flashes (making you more tired if you can’t sleep through the night or making you feel cranky  in general), the redistribution of weight that happens (making us feel less attractive), the lack of vaginal lubrication which can make sex without a commercial lubricant quite uncomfortable, and/or possibly the subconscious thought that we are ‘past our prime’ which impairs our ability to feel as sexy as we once did.

While there is no simple, ‘magic’ pill, there are some simple things you can do to make this transition easier and improve your sexual desire. These are not a secret but are often overlooked. It is now more important then ever that you eat well, drink lots of water to stay hydrated (especially if you experience a lot of hot flashes or night sweats), get plenty of rest and you MUST exercise. Vigorous activity three times a week that makes you sweat will not only reduce your stress, but if it is weight bearing, it will minimize bone loss and the side effect of lots of exercise is an increase in libido. All those endorphins from jogging will kick start your sex drive!

You can also try Evening Primrose Oil to moderate your hormones and potentially reduce hot flashes. Try a water soluble lubricant for vaginal dryness (you can find a fabulous naturally flavoured one on my website www.kimswitnicki.com), or check with a compounding pharmacy in conjunction with a naturopath to find out about bio-identical hormone creams which can improve lubrication and may also reduce symptoms and improve your desire.

This is a unique time in a woman’s life, leading to a whole new and exciting chapter in her life. I know of a number of women whose sex drives came back with a vengeance after their change. All the best to you!
